This summer I've had several folks who have asked me for recommendations on what to read. Here's an interesting case--my twenty-something daughter asked me for a reading recommendation and so did my ninety-one year old father-in-law. For both of them, I recommended the first book in the HUNGER GAMES series (author: Suzanne Collins). I also recommended several other books that were more his usual reading--Clive Cusler for example.
Well, both daughter and father-in-law read book one of HUNGER GAMES and then they both read books two and three in the series without even telling me. My father-in-law's eyes are not so great, so he has to download on a Nook for the large print. Isn't that amazing that a current YA best seller would appeal to a twenty-something and a ninety something! Anyway--one of my summer recommendations.
Two former students in Tennessee asked for recommendations. I suggested THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN by Sherman Alexie and EMPIRE FALLS by Richard Russo. My former students loved both of these--one YA and one literary fiction. If you want to try these and you don't like long prologues, skip the prologue in EMPIRE FALLS and jump right into chapter one. I've just had an on-line discussion with students and they found so much elegance in the writng of Russo. They also loved TRUE DIARY. The drawings in TRUE DIARY are an added bonus!!
I also recommended WATER FOR ELEPHANTS by Sara Gruen for my N.Y.C. daughter after she finished the Collins series. She finished WFE this morning on the subway and had lots to say about it--SHE LIKED IT. She felt August was dispatched a bit too quickly. I didn't feel that way though. He was such a bad guy, I was glad to get him out of the picture!
Anyway--if you're looking for something to read, you might want to try any or all of the ones above!!!

NUMBER OF MEETINGS: Two four-hour Saturday classes, 10:00 - 12:00/break for lunch/1:00 - 2:00
DATES: Saturday August 20 and Saturday August 27

While there are four building blocks, this two session course focuses closely on THE SCENE. Major emphasis will be on the crucial elements of scenes—rising action, arc, and internal tension.
